Casa d'Arte Centro de Cultura
The Casa d'Arte Centro de Cultura was created in 2014 as a private cultural center and art gallery located on the island of São Luís, Northern Brazil.
The center has been specially designed to inspire, create, experiment, investigate, and disseminate art and culture in all of their forms.
The project produces numerous regular activities as communitarian meetings, culinary workshops, educative programs, co-working spaces for creative industries, exhibitions, traditional and historical heritage activities, movie screenings, and promotion of alternative economies. It aims to shelter and encourage creative processes and collaborative networks that foster authenticity and autonomy in the artistic fields.
The residency welcomes all types of artists with no restriction of age, career level or disciplines, for a month-long stay with the option to chose between self-directed, investigation, or production programs. The selected artists will be hosted by pair in an eco-constructed house in the center’s garden, they’ll have access to shared studios, a library, music instruments, computers, printers, a stage, and exhibition spaces. They will also receive assistance in the realization of their projects and contacts with local institutions and agents of the cultural fields. Not mandatory but strongly encouraged, the artists can organize workshops, classes, exhibitions, communitarian projects, conferences, readings, and performances. Artists may apply by sending an artist statement, a body of artworks, and a project proposal.
The Center is also the base of the Instituto Maranhão Sustentável, an initiative focusing on sustainability in all dimensions, being social, cultural, architectural, institutional, environmental, or economical. The Instituto Maranhão Sustentável has a dedicated residency program for sustainable architecture.
