LASA - Laboratorio Artístico de San Agustín
LASA is a private cultural center created in 2008 on the outskirts of La Havana by the Cuban artist Candelario and the French curator Aurélie Sampeur.
LASA is a multidisciplinary laboratory that works as a non-institutional tool for architects, designers, artists from all disciplines, and many students of the country wishing to elaborate on new ways of creation and expression. It offers a well-designed framework that allows artistic experimentation, contextualization of the public space, and cultural confrontation, taking into consideration the identity of the specific suburbs of San Augustín. LASA is a well-recognized center that works closely with its community and organizes numerous events to give back the public space to its inhabitants.
Artists in residence are invited to intervene in this territory after a thoughtful investigation of its specificities. Artists are not judged on their disciplines but on the process’ creativity of their proposal, and there are no restrictions whatsoever to the type of artists who can apply to the residency program. Artists will be selected with a Curriculum Vitae, an artist statement, a project proposal, a body of artworks, or their latest artworks, to which they can add videos and their website.
With up to three artists in residence at the same time for a period varying from two weeks to a month, artists will be given a private room, a shared studio, access to wood tools, printers, metal-working workshops, and receive mentoring from the eclectic staff of the center during their project. In exchange for their stay, artists are encouraged to give workshops, classes, conferences, or open-studio, depending on the participant, the project, and its needs.
